The annual Wyatt Tyler ‘13 Environmental Justice Award is given to a Franklin student who has excelled in AP Environmental Science and has demonstrated a commitment to environmental and social justice outside of the classroom. The recipient is selected by a committee of Ben Franklin science faculty.

 

The award is bestowed in memory of Wyatt Devon Tyler, a 2013 Ben Franklin graduate who passed away on March 25, 2017. Wyatt was a curious, inspiring, and deeply critical thinker whose passion for politics as well as environmental and social justice blossomed at Franklin. His scholastic aptitude led him to New York University where he pursued a degree in environmental science while continuing his activism.

 

Above all, Wyatt is remembered for his enormous heart; he was a man who loved the people in his life with rare intensity and loyalty. As Maya Angelou said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Wyatt’s connections with friends, family, and even strangers evoked bonds that will never be forgotten. He sought to change the world and succeeded.

 

The Wyatt Tyler ’13 Environmental Justice Award seeks to carry forward the work and legacy of this fervent and courageous young man. The award aims to inspire a generation of socially-conscious and empathy-driven activists to leave behind a more equitable society, and ensure future generations inherit a livable planet by taking action on climate change. All donations to this fund will be used to fund the Wyatt Tyler '13 Environmental Justice Award.
